In late 2007, Associate Matt Cherry performed some pro-bono work for the Atlanta Downtown Neighborhood Association, creating design concepts to revitalize Barbara Asher Square (aka Broad Street Plaza). The process engaged both city officials and the Five Points Task force in addressing this problem area in Downtown Atlanta, while making headlines in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The New York Times. It has now been recently announced that Central Atlanta Progress has secured federal stimulus funds to transform the area with various lighting, paver, planter and landscaping upgrades.

by Matt Cherry on November 18th, 2009The Midtown Alliance’s Cityscapes Program, which Urban Collage has helped to manage since 2001, recently won a PEDS (Pedestrians Educating Drivers on Safety) Golden Shoe Award for the “Peachtree Street Road Diet.” The Peachtree Street streetscape project, now about to begin its third phase of implementation, has helped to transform Atlanta’s signature street into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly mixed-use corridor.
Red Mile Development Plan
by Stanford Harvey on July 15th, 2009The Red Mile Development Plan is a progressive infill development project located in the heart of Lexington, KY at the nation’s second oldest standing chariot racing venue. The Red Mile is a 138 acre plot of land surrounded by mid-high density residential development and light-heavy industrial land use. The Development Plan utilizes 62 acres of prime land that fronts along the Red Mile Road site, and includes concepts for: commercial space, residential units, office space and open space including the Red Mile Greenway. The plan strives to enhance the existing historic fabric on site while also providing new opportunities to the region, and is one of, if not the first, major mixed-use developments in Lexington. It is designed to be a walkable community and a major entertainment destination for the city of Lexington that will utilize major destination retail, restaurants, and an improved Red Mile race track facility to attract visitors and residents.
Born Learning Trail opens at East End

The trail, a symbol of the communities’ commitment to children, provides a set of fun activities that help kids develop problem solving, critical thinking and reading skills. This trail is the first of its kind in Kentucky and continues the momentum of the East End Small Area Plan developed by EHI Consultants, Urban Collage and Wilbur Smith & Associates.

Principal featured in Georgia Tech’s architecture centennial lecture series

In particular, the panel focused on the emergence of “urban design” as a profession in Atlanta and its corresponding rise in prominence in the College.
